The last time the UK hosted the Olympics, it was an EU member. But after Brexit in January 2020, plus frequent government changes—from Boris Johnson and Liz Truss to Rishi Sunak and now Keir Starmer—and the 2020 pandemic, its economy has struggled, with an uncertain outlook. Hosting top events like athletics and para-athletics championships is seen as a way to rebound.

Against the backdrop of the Diamond League, the UK government said in a Saturday release: “Subject to partner funding, we’ve agreed significant financial support for the bids, showing our ambition to welcome the world’s best athletes again.”

BBC Sport reports that the Para Athletics Championships are “planned to expand beyond the capital, with host cities to be confirmed.” The central government expects to contribute around £35 million (€40 million), with London’s mayor’s office adding £10 million (€12 million) in public funds.

This investment reflects a strategic push: using sports to reignite national momentum. After years of instability, the UK hopes major events will not only boost the economy but also rebuild its global profile as a reliable host.

With funding pledges in place, attention now turns to whether the bids will succeed. For a nation seeking stability, securing the championships could mark a small but meaningful step toward regaining confidence on the world stage.
